The McKenzie Lofts - a newer Art Deco design building with the charm of the 1920's. 6 floors with 68 lofts. 1 and 2 bedrooms at 682 square feet to 1725 square feet. Built in 1998.

GOAL: Design a new project that fits into the existing industrial warehouse fabric of Portland’s Pearl District. Give it an active ground floor and make it cost effective.
DESIGN RESPONSE: This mixed-use project was the first new housing to be built in Portland's Pearl District. Designed to look like it had always been there, it respects the area's existing industrial character with simple materials and a form that echoes its neighbors. A concrete base at street level differentiates the retail from the loft housing above. The housing’s brick façade is accented by metal balconies and windows with metal mullions similar to other warehouse windows nearby. The large windows bathe the open loft spaces with abundant natural light. Roof terraces provide an opportunity for residents to socialize and enjoy the pedestrian activity below. The Mckenzie is a 5-story, 134,000 sf building with 63 residential units and ground floor retail.
